Le chant de Sam à Cirith Ungol

Au sommet de la tour de Cirith Ungol, Sam est seul et désespéré.

Il entonne un chant mêlant « la poésie de Mr. Bilbon », et ses propres inventions.

Peut-êt’ dans l’Ouest sous le soleil

Brillent les arbres sur l'eau vive.

Les fleurs et boutons se réveillent.

Tout’ joyeuse chante la grive.

Ou dans la nuit immaculée

Bougent les ramées du fouteau

Sa chevelure constellée

Avec tout plein de blancs joyaux.

Je gis las au bout du parcours

Sous les ombres tout affaibli,

Au-delà d'imprenables tours

Par-delà l'espoir aboli.

Mais intouchables pour toujours

Volent l'étoile et le soleil.

Je n’puis souffrir la fin des jours

Ni renoncer à ces merveilles.
